About the Design

Designed in 1986 by Robert A. M. Stern.

The architect’s seven courtyards evoke feelings of an informal European village or intimate mews. Interlocking town homes with free-standing second floors and balconies opening to a central courtyard cleverly marries privacy with conviviality. Clay tile roofs, stucco walls, rustic trellises and plain window shutters echo the farm groupings of Andalusia, Spain. Stern’s repeated use of simple clean lines, traditional arches, columns, moldings, chimneys, and divided glass doors and windows is unique and expressive. Thoughtful interior features including fireplaces, French doors and windows, contribute to the quality of the town homes of Wood Duck Island.
